Stop procrastinating and just write the blog!

I was talking the talk but not walking the walk!  In my last blog, I said that you should always be authentic and open because people can spot insincerity and a fake a mile away. However, in the spirit of honesty, I have a confession to make…my last blog for my very own website was written over a year ago and I’m a content writer!

Procrastination is not good. Not good at all.

It’s a bit like the builder who never gets round to working on his own home or the bookkeeper who is last minute with their own tax returns! No excuse although in my defence I have to say that I am writing blogs for my clients, and they always must come first for me.

But now it is time for me to walk the walk, follow my own advice and make sure that I keep my content updated and my social platforms fed with regular posts.

You, the reader today, will be my accountability so please feel free to check back in a month to read my next blog!

Below are a few questions that I have been asked.

Why have a blog on my website?

A blog is fresh content and Google and other search engines, LOVE new content, especially if it is interesting, relevant and includes some of your key words.

What do I write in a blog?

Something relevant to your business or if it is about you, then you need to connect it to your company. It can be about a latest product, service, or deal that you are offering. It may be an event. It could be an occasion – the birthday of your company or a milestone in your organisation or new team members.

Human beings are curious creatures and love to hear about how companies were started, how they got to where they are today and any challenges they met along the way. Remember, we usually buy because we like and trust a business.

Make a plan

Although any new content is good, always have a plan – how is your year panning out? Do you have new products or services coming out, is there an event that you are going to be at? Put a plan in place for the year. Take into consideration holidays and occasions in the British calendar – you can always include these in a blog. Diarise your blogs, plan when you are going to add them to your site and endeavour to do add a blog at least once a month.

Does a blog just sit on my website and what use is it?

A new blog can just sit on your site twiddling its thumbs waiting for people to visit it or you can encourage people to visit and read it by maximizing its visibility.

How do I increase the visibility of a blog?

You do this by creating a link back to the blog on your website by uploading posts on social platforms.

  • LinkedIn
  • Facebook
  • Instagram

Each of these posts is a ‘look at me’ signpost back to your blog which sits on your website and this is great for search engine traffic! It means you get the maximum visibility from one blog because it can be read on multiple platforms.

Call to action

ALWAYS finish a blog with a call to action. What you do you want your readers to do? Pick up the phone to call you? Send you an email? Fill out a contact form? Create opportunity for leads from your blogs by adding that all important call to action.

I don’t have time to write a blog and I don’t feel confident enough to write one

Then call me! Everyone is different and whereas, you may not like writing, I absolutely love it! I will find out about you and your business and together we can come up with a strategy for the next six months. I will do the competitor and search engine optimisation research for you to ensure we add the key words into your blog.

Make it visual

Always include an eye-catching image or photograph. You can either take your own (make sure they are a high resolution and interesting) or you can choose a stock image from an image library like iStock or Shutterstock. A subscription costs about £25 per month for a set number of images or you can buy them ad-hoc.

How do I start to write a blog?

Pick a product or service that you are proud of. Why are you proud of it? What makes it special? What problem can it solve? Who can it help? Start writing. Sounds simple, but sometimes the thought of writing your own blog is more intimidating than doing it!
